An Overview of Selinda and Zibalianja Camps, and Selinda's Walking Safaris

An Overview of the Selinda Reserve Operation:

The Selinda Reserve is a private exclusive wildlife concession. There is no crowding of vehicles around game sightings. The camps are small, personal and professionally run to give you an intimate experience. They are not part of a group or chain of safari camps. They are not designer camps, but do cater for a high level of comfort.

By choosing a Selinda Reserve Camp, you directly contribute to scientific research within the concession. This involves aerial game counts, computerized data base on mammals, birds & vegetation, full moon game counts and game monitoring, and scout patrols. This all takes manpower, money and effort from all of our team.

Being on its own reserve, Selinda offers night game viewing and off-road driving. Being able to get out of the vehicle at any time for a closer look or a short walk all add to your safari

experience.

Selinda is also proud to be the first to offer and operate the wonderful opportunity of full walking safaris in Botswana. There is game viewing of a high standard--especially the big cats.

Linyanti Explorations (Pty) Ltd, which operates the Selinda Reserve, is one of the few citizen owned/operated safari businesses in Botswana, with over 20 years' experience in the area.

Gameviewing in the Selinda Reserve:

Game drives take place at dawn; afternoon; & evening in seven-seater open-sided, 4x4 vehicles with qualified professional guides. Roam the open flood plains of the Selinda Reserve, both on and off-road, searching out the big game, sometimes stopping for short walks or a more detailed inspection of things. The Selinda area is well known for its hippo-killing lions, cheetah, wild dog and if you're lucky, a leopard on your night drive. Good sightings of plains game such as giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, impala, lechwe, tsessebe, kudu and elephant are common, plus the added excitement of night predators like hyaena, jackal, bat-eared fox, & small cats.

Game viewing by boat on the Zibalianja Lagoon is available depending on the current water level at the time. Bird watching is excellent and many owls can be spotted on the night drives.

Walking Safaris:

Your walking safari is a two night adventure into the wilderness of the Selinda Reserve, led by your very experienced armed professional guide and a bushman tracker. As one observer put it:

"The best safari experience is the one closest to nature and there is no substitute for walking, until you have had enough, and then forgetting exhaustion as you spot the magnificent creatures. Elephant, giraffe, cheetah. Then stalking or crawling in close, until you smell the elephant or hear the giraffe chew the acacia thorns. Finally, to let it continue its life undisturbed, to leave it, quietly, as you found it." (Bartle Bull)

Your overnight tents are mini-Meru, mosquito proof, and fitted with canvas stretchers, mattress, full bedding, clothing shelves & lighting. Out front is a canvas wash basin and water jug. Nearby is an open-air hot/cold bucket shower and long drop toilet. Laundry is washed and ironed daily. Preparation of meals is carried out by the trail hostess around the campfire, with open air dining.

Your safari guide is in radio contact with his partner at all times and a support vehicle is available for the duration of the safari. The walk is relatively easy over flat, firm ground, with some sandy patches. The safari duration is three days walking with two nights in trail camps. There are approximately 8 kilometres of inter-camp walking per day,and 4 kilometres casual walking in the vicinity of each trail camp.

The safari starts and ends at one of the permanent camps.
