Nkawli Camp, Zambia
Nkwali Camp is located on Robin Pope's private land 10 kms south of the Mfuwe bridge. It is on the eastern bank of the Luangwa river opposite the South Luangwa National Park. There is a new pontoon near the camp which enables vehicles to cross straight into the park without having to drive to the Mfuwe bridge.
The Camp
Accommodating 12 people, the camp is situated on the river bank in a beautiful and secluded wild woodland, with many ebony and mahogany groves. Giraffe, puku, impala, waterbuck and wild dog have all been seen close to the camp There are hippo in the river and large herds of elephant are frequently seen crossing the river in the early morning and evening. The views of both sunrise and sunset are spectacular.
Accommodations
These consist of six thatched open style cottages with woven bamboo walls and white plaster on the inside. They have twin beds with 4 inch mattresses, feather pillows, sheets, duvets and walkin mosquito nets and there is storage space for clothes. A double bed is available on request. The en suite bathroom which is open to the sky has a hand basin and shower with hot/cold water and the flush loo has a cone grass roof. Each cottage overlooks the river and has a verandah with 2 chairs.
The dining room is in a reed and thatched building overlooking a waterhole and the thatched bar is built around a huge ebony tree on the banks of the river.
Lighting
By solar power, paraffin and gas. Video batteries can be charged in camp.
Electric Fence
A low electric fence is switched on at night.
Activities
Game viewing by open vehicle and on foot escorted by an armed scout, birdwatching and spotlit night drives which is a particularly exciting way to view game and affords the opportunity to see a number of nocturnal animals not normally seen during the day.
Transfers
By air to Mfuwe, where met and driven to Nkwali - approximately 45 minutes on a good tarmac.
