To the right: Safari Nzuri strives to give our clients a private Namibia--a goal that the country's vastness, and quality operators like Skeleton Coast Safaris, help us achieve

Namibia is one of the planet's most scenic, and undoubtedly its most eclectic, countries. From the apricot dunes of the Namib; to the sweeping, ancient and lonely vistas of the Skeleton Coast; to the bronzed valleys of its interior, the country is a photographer's dream. And, with but 1.5 million people sharing 315,000 square miles, Namibia is a good place to be alone. Etosha National Park is both rich and diverse in wildlife-from its famous lion to the healthiest remaining black rhino population in Africa. Hard-to-photograph species such as kudu and eland are easily approachable, in large numbers, at Etosha. For the latest State Department information on Namibia, click here.

Safari Season

The season here is from May to October. Beginning in November, the interior of the country becomes unbearably hot, though the coast, influenced by the Antarctic Benguela current, retains its San Francisco weather year-round.

Drawbacks

Outside Etosha National Park, wildlife is not nearly as abundant as elsewhere in Africa. And the tourist side of Etosha-the east side-is regimented, with paved roads leading to parking areas at popular waterholes. It's noisy, crowded and tourists are forbidden to leave their vehicles.

Skeleton Coast Safaris and NatureFriend Safaris

We have long relied on the Schoeman family's storied Skeleton Coast Safaris for expeditions into the roadless wilderness of Namibia's northern coast. These safaris combine small plane and landrover to link the Schoeman's small permanent camps in the painted valleys of this wild outback, and along the Kunene River on the Angola border. Whatever Namibian safari one ultimately chooses, it should be anchored around a Skeleton Coast Safaris expedition. You can learn more about Skeleton Coast Safaris, and the Skeleton Coast itself, by clicking here.

For its part, Nature Friend Safaris uses Woldedans Dune Camp and Lodge as a hub to connect, by small airplane, the indispensible components of a proper Namibian safari. In such an expansive country, this Namibian family-run enterprise makes it possible to enjoy the very finest natural experiences of this country in a relatively short period of time.

A Sample of Small Permanent Camps

16-bed Huab Lodge, located just outside Etosha National Park, has twice been awarded Namibia's Best Lodge honor. It sits in a 20,000 acre private wildlife reserve where desert elephant, mountain zebra and other game thrive. It offers an array of walking, vehicular and horseback game drives, and is a jumping-off point for explorations into the less trafficked west side of Etosha, and perhaps a stay at Hobartare, a quiet small lodge on Etosha's west side where wildlife viewing is done in peace.

To the south, Woldedans Dune Camp and Lodge are the only other Namibian camps (besides Huab) to earn mention in the elite list of "Classic Safari Camps of Africa." The eight-chalet lodge, and the more remote six-unit bush camp, are both elegantly blended into the 180,000-hectare NamibRand Nature Reserve--a classic apricot-hued Namib environment that shares a 120 kilometre common border with the Namib-Naukluft National Park. The camp and lodge hold an exclusive concession to use this private reserve and enjoy its resident gemsbok, mountain zebra, springbok, kudu, leopard and other indigenous wildlife.

Our Recommendation

From our perspective, a 10-day Namibian safari would would be anchored around a 6-day, and wondrously-comprehensive, Skeleton Coast Safaris' itinerary that includes not only a 4-day expedition into the roadless wilderness of the Skeleton Coast, but also two nights at

Woldedans Dune Camp, a visit to the Sossusvlei Dunes, and a trip to isolated Luderitz--that gingerbread town so rich in history that most Namibia visitors overlook. The safari areas are connected by small aircraft, so that time isn't wasted commuting. The price is $6525/person, inclusive of very extensive air travel. The detailed itinerary can be reviewed by clicking here. The safari begins and ends at Windhoek, and from there you can extend your safari to Etosha National Park.
